In recent years, Portuguese animation has been in the spotlight – and for the best reasons: the country has witnessed an increase in the production of animated feature films and shorts by a new generation of authors – historic achievements such as Ice Merchants, which gave Portugal its first Oscar nomination, an award at the Cannes Film Festival, and the second Portuguese Annie Award, just two years after Regina Pessoa's win at the Annies with the celebrated Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days. Furthermore, last year, Percebes won the Cristal Award at Annecy, in the year that Portuguese animation was the highlight of the festival, celebrating one hundred years of animation production in Portugal.
All these achievements have helped to give visibility to this new wave of filmmakers and the wonderful animation that comes out of Portugal every year. The goal of Porto.Anim is to showcase the work of this diverse group of talented artists and bring the general public closer to the fantastic animation being created in the city. In this edition, we highlight the BAP cooperative.
Created in 2011 as the animation studio of the production company Bando à Parte, the cooperative became autonomous in 2018 and since then has stood out for creating several original productions that have been exhibited and awarded at some of the most important festivals on the international scene: Annecy, Cannes, Sundance, Zagreb, Toronto, Locarno, and the list goes on…
In the third edition of the event, we highlight the work of the directors and directing duos that make up the cooperative: David Doutel and Vasco Sá, Laura Gonçalves and Alexandra Ramires, Marta Reis Andrade and Marta Sousa Ribeiro, Leonor Pacheco, Vitor Hugo Rocha and Dimitri Mihajlovic, and Miguel Lima.
