Celestial Pole and Abyssal Plain is a two-stage portal that connects diametrically opposed places. In the foreground, a great arc containing the Celestial Pole: an imaginary point in the sky where Earth’s axis of rotation, extended indefinitely, intersects the celestial sphere. In the background lies the abyssal plain: a fractured zone that resists exploration, marked by submerged ridges and mountains, coarse sands, metallic nodules, and fossils from rare waters. Both places are mediated in the body through a wound in the stomach, and in the spirit through images glimpsed in the darkness between wakefulness and sleep.

Sofia Rocha (Azores, 1996) holds a BA in Fine Arts – Multimedia, and an MA in Fine Arts – Intermedia, both from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto.

Her practice investigates the interplay between the Visible and the Invisible, exploring energetic exchanges and alchemical processes. Through material experimentation and speculative correspondences, she seeks to bring intangible phenomena, flows, and systems into dialogue with three-dimensional form, images and actions.

Her work has been presented in collective exhibitions since 2019, including Ponto Cego (Branda, Porto 2025), Corpos Magmáticos (Vaga, Azores, 2024), Eu Vi o Brilho (oBueiro, Porto, 2023), Grotto Experience (Café au Lait, Porto, 2022), Festival Súbito (Gaia, 2021), and Úmbria (Teatro de Vila Real, 2021).
